Politics (and other follies)

Some themes I'd like to consider: What can Democrats learn from Republicans? How have Democrats lost their way? Can one be a "born-again Christian" AND a good Democrat? (This is not a trick question!) Conversely, can one be a good Christian AND a card-carrying Republican? (Likewise, let's consider the question seriously.) Is it possible (or advisable) to develop a political platform based on a few core principles? Some possible themes come to mind... How can we as private citizens shift the political dialogue away from fear and loathing? What IS the proper role of government in our daily lives? Is it possible for government and religion to work together without magnifying the worst qualities of both?
